EFFECT OF WATER QUALITY PROPERTIES ON INFESTATION OF Nymphae lotus IN SELECTED WATERBODIES AT MAKURDI.

ABSTRACT:

An experiment was carried out to determine water quality properties (physical, chemical and biological), influencing infestations of Nymphae lotus (Water lotus) in three selected waterbodies and River Benue (control), at Makurdi. The choice of selection of the waterbodies was presence of Nymphae lotus and observed luxuriance. Four samples each were collected in sterile 75 cl water bottles at four different points in each waterbody based on observed area covered by Nymphae lotus and taken to the laboratory for routine quality analyses of selected parameters: (temperature, turbidity, colour, soluble solutes, total dissolved solids, total soluble solutes, electrical conductivity, pH, Nitrate, ammonium nitrate, hardness, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, potassium, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand). Results showed that water quality properties were altered (SS, TDS, TSS, EC, pH, No , NHo -N), 3 4 mainly attributed to immobility of water in the waterbodies hence, infestation, most likely caused by influxes of erosive particles within their catchment, thereby, increasing nutrient status, especially as the waterbodies were located in lowlands areas prone to influxes from dumps and wastes effluents. Also, results showed that these waterbodies were confined so, had limited movement. Apart from temperature, all the parameters assessed were observed to be higher than the control, while pH (7.84±0.02), dissolved oxygen (DO), (5.85±0.05), turbidity (70.85±0.05), soluble solids (46.50±0.50), total dissolved solids (36.60±0.20), biological oxygen demand (68.50±0.50) and chemical oxygen demand (128.00±0.00) respectively, were significantly (p≤0.05) higher at P4. Turbidity, ammonium nitrate and phosphorus were identified as the prominent attributes causing adaptability of Nymphae lotus to thrive in the waterbodies leading to their preponderance. It is recommended that the waterbodies be embanked and anthropogenic activities around their catchment be restricted to prevent nutrient influx. Also, the waterbodies ought to be treated using short- and long-term measures to mitigate conditions suitable for growth of N. lotus.
