COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFICACY OF CRACK-OPEN AND CANDLING FERTILITY TEST OF JAPANESE QUAIL (Coturnix japonica) EGGS.

ABSTRACT:

Due to the mottled nature of quail eggs, it has been a challenge in determining the fertility of their eggs by candling. A total of 180 eggs were incubated. On days 7, 8 and 9 of incubation, 60 pieces of eggs per day were collected, candled and cracked open to compare the efficacy of candling and crack-open examination fertility test of quails eggs. The efficacy (accuracy, sensitivity and specificity) of candling to crack-open test in determining the fertility status of quail eggs was also examined. The result showed that there was no significant difference at 5% level of probability between crack-open and candling methods in determining the fertility (tcal 0.3162 < ttab 3.182 ) or infertility (tcal 0.447 < ttab 3.182) status of quail eggs. Candling had an accuracy of 86.7, 100 and 100 %, a sensitivity of 91.3, 100 and 100 % and a specificity of 71.4, 100 and 100 % on days seven, eight, and nine days of incubation, respectively. Candling quail eggs as early as eight days of incubation could also detect dead in germ cells, dehydrated, and rotten eggs. Conclusively, candling at eight days of incubation is an excellent alternative to crackopen tests for fertility of quail eggs.
