ASSESSING THE POTABILITY OF WATER FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES USING WATER QUALITY INDEX METHOD IN SLUM AREAS OF THE ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL, ABUJA, NIGERIA

Water Quality Index (WQI) is a valuable and unique rating to depict the overall water quality status in a single term that is helpful for the selection of appropriate treatment techniques to meet the concerned issues. This study uses the Water Quality Index (WQI) to access the potability of water from various sources in slum areas of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, (AMAC), Nigeria. Water samples were collected from three sources; borehole, well and tap. Water from vendors was used to supplement taps where they were not available. WQI was determined for various physico-chemical parameters (pH, dissolve solid, total suspended solids, total hardness, turbidity, dissolved oxygen), concentration of heavy metals (Iron, Zinc and Lead) Biological parameters like Salmonella and Staphylococcus were also examined. WQI from the different water samples were found to be varied from 0.3 to 6.7 for pipe-borne water (and water from vendors), 0.65 to 16.5 for borehole water and 81.6 to 229.0 Well water. The results indicated that pysico-chemical and biological properties of water from different sources do not vary significantly with the WHO standard and water quality does not vary over space within the study area. The result also indicated that tap water or water collected from the vendor has the highest quality which is not accessible to everyone because of its cost. This study therefore recommended that slum areas are supplied with adequate tap water while ensuring that post-contamination of tap water is reduced to the barest minimum.
