INFLUENCE OF TREATED WASTEWATER ON THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS OF WUPA ABUJA, NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT:

Soil samples were collected from five different locations at a sewage water treatment plant in Abuja Nigeria (four along a canal discharging treated wastewater into Wupa River and one site about 50 m away from the canal to serve a control). The collected samples were analysed for some physical and chemical properties of the soil in a bid to tracking changes in soil characteristics. All the sites were sandy loam in texture with high sand content of more than 642 g/kg to 772 g/kg. Bulk density of the soil ranged from 1.33 to 1.81 gcm-3 while porosity ranged from 32.00 % to 49.81 % making the soil satisfactory to good agricultural soil. Soil hydraulic conductivity was moderately slow to moderately rapid having values 4.28 to 6.62 cm/hr. Soil pH was moderately acidic to slightly acidic (5.58 to 6.29). Electrical conductivity ranged from 9.63 to 43.00 μScm-1 suggesting that the soluble salts in the soils had significantly increased owing to contact with treated waste water. Soil organic carbon and organic matter were rated as low (1.50 g/kg to 4.80 g/kg and 2.6 g/kg to 8.30 g/kg respectively). All the exchangeable cations were low, however, exchangeable acidity showed an increased trend as influenced by treated waste water with values ranging from 0.08 to 0.40 cmol/kg. Cation exchange capacity was also low suggesting low nutrient holding potential of the soil. It was observed that soil electrical conductivity, organic carbon/organic matter, available phosphorus and soil exchangeable acidity were influenced by treated wastewater hence lower values were observed in soil that had no contact with the treated wastewater. It becomes imperative that high rates of organic manures should be applied to the soils as a way of improving the soils’ physical quality and productivity. The treated wastewater significantly influenced most of the chemical properties of the soil.
