ANTI-FUNGAL ACTIVITY OF Artemisia annua L. EXTRACTS AGAINST FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH POST-HARVEST ROTTEN TOMATOES IN LAFIA MARKETS NASARAWA STATE NIGERIA.

The research was carried out to investigate the anti-fungal activity of Artemisia annua L. extracts against fungi associated with harvested rotten tomatoes in major tomatoes markets in Lafia Nasarawa state, with the objectives of isolating fungi from the rotten tomato fruits, identify the fungal isolates and finally determine the effect of Artemisia annua L. extract against the fungal isolates. The experiment consisted of both fresh and rotten samples of tomatoes gotten from different vegetable markets in Lafia and an Artemisia annua plant samples used in the experiment as fungi inhibitor. The result of the experiment showed that three main fungi were isolated and identified during this experiment viz: Aspergillus niger, Geotrichum candidum, and Rhizopus stolonifer. It also showed the effects of Artemisia annua extract on the radial growth of the three tomato fruit rot pathogens, namely Aspergillus niger, Geotrichum candidum, and Rhizopus stolonifer, with variations observed in the percentage inhibition of the radial growths of the rot fungi challenged with the different extracts after different post-inoculation durations. Aspergillus niger was most inhibited (94.44%) at 30% concentration of ethanolic extracts after four days of inoculation, followed by Geotrichum candidum (88.28%), and Rhizopus stolonifer (88.24%), after five days of inoculation with 10% concentration of aqueous and 30% concentration of ethanolic leaf extracts of Artemisia annua, respectively. Differences in the percentage radial growth inhibition of the test fungi were only significant at the first day after inoculation of aqueous extracts (p≤0.05).
