INFLUENCE OF SOME AGRONOMICAL PRACTICES ON INCIDENCE OF VIRUSES INFECTING SOYBEAN

Soybean is a valuable source of dietary protein and oil for human comsumption. However, viral diseases are the most militating cause of its poor growth, low yield and reduction in the quality of the crop. Weeds have been observed to be alternative hosts to viral pathogens, while Insect vectors were agents of viral transmission in the field. The objective of this study therefore was to assess the effect of weeding and insecticidal applications on the incidence and severity of viral disease. Four weeding regimes and four levels of insecticide applications were factorially combined and fitted in randomized complete block in a field experiment. All data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were separated using the new Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5 % level of significance. The findings of the study revealled that Weeding twice and application of insecticide twice during growth period significantly reduced disease incidence and increased yield of soybean. These were recommended to growers as control strategy of viral diseases and their weedhosts.
