DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY OF DRY SEASON WEED SPECIES ON UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA MAIN CAMPUS, ABUJA, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

Weeds are major interacting components of terrestrial habitat or agro-ecosystems. Their abundance and diversity vary significantly among different communities and fields. This study investigated the distribution, abundance and density of weed species in University of Abuja main campus. Determination of weed species at selected points involved use of a quadrat of 1 m2thrown at points infested with weeds at five (5) points in each of the studied eight (8) locations in the University. A Geographical Positioning System (GPS) of the five plots of each location was taken. A total of 35 weed species belonging to 16 families were identified on the Campus. It was observed that mint weed (Hyptis suaveolens L) was the most occurring weed (46.41%) in all the sitesselected , infesting 738 out of 1,590 points in all the locations. The frequency of occurrence of H. suaveolens L. was 97.5% and the absolute density of 18.9 %. Out of the 35 weed species recorded in the area, 30 species showed frequency of < 4.4 %. The order of frequency or distribution of H suaveolens, Cynodon dactylon, Sida acuta, Senna obtusifolia, Ageratum conyzoides, occurred in descending order as presented.
