ASSESSMENT OF IMPACTS OF ENTRANCE MODIFICATION ON COLONY ESTABLISHMENT AND HONEYBEE INSECT PEST MANAGEMENT

Honeybee colony establishment and pest control measure was experimented in the entrance design modification research conducted at the University of Ilorin Apiary. The study entails the modifications of four different hive entrances fabricated as follows: 1cm triangular shaped serrated and 5 cm rectangular shaped in Kenyan Top Bar hives and 1 cm,as well as, 5 cm rectangular shaped Langstroth hives entrances. Also, the influence of iron stand and introduction of used engine oil in containers at the base of hive stand was engaged for control of pest of honeybees. The result shows the preference of honeybees for small sized entrances of 1 cm triangular serrated and 1cm rectangular entrances in Kenyan top bar and Langstroth hives in terms of higher rate of colonization as well as restriction of lesser wax moth and large hive beetle infestation. All hives with wider entrances of 5 cm in Kenyan Top Bar and Langstroth hives recorded different degrees of infestation by honeybee pests. Beekeepers in the country are encouraged to utilize small entranced hives and introduction of used engine oil at the base of beehives for proper management of honeybee pest.
