PROXIMATE, MINERAL ELEMENTS AND VITAMINS COMPOSITION ANALYSES OF LANDOLPHIA OWARIENSIS P.BEAUV. FRUIT JUICE FROM IJUMU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KOGI STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

Proximate, mineral and nutritional composition of Landolphia owariensis P. Beauv. (Apocyaceae) fruit juice was studied using standard analytical method. The result of the proximate composition analysis of Landolphia owariensis fruit juice indicated that it contains 0.61, 0.91, 6.04, 0.061, 11.69 and 80.69 % ash, lipids, protein, fibre, carbohydrate and moisture respectively. The elemental analysis shows that it contains 1.60, 1012.9, 67.98, 1.54, 1.57, 37.77 mg/L of iron, magnesium, copper, potassium, Zinc, Manganese and Chromium respectively with a minute quantity of copper (0.57 mg/L). The vitamins contents were 3.98 and 1.29 mg/L of vitamins A and C respectively. This result inferred that L. owariensis fruit juice contains appreciable amounts of proteins well as other macro and micro elements which confirmed it to be nutritious. Exploring the rich content of Chromium in the juice for mitigation use by overweight people is a good step.
