EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SMALLHOLDER RICE PRODUCTION IN RICE PRODUCING ZONES OF OGUN-STATE.

ABSTRACT:

Climate variability has caused tremendous effects on agricultural production system in Nigeria. This requires that smallholder farmers that constitute the majority of the farming population use different climate smart strategies to mitigate these climatic effects. This study analyzed Comparative Analysis of the effects of climate change on smallholder rice production in rice producing zones of Ogun-State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 208 respondents from major rice producing clusters in Ogun State. Interview guide and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were used to obtain primary data on the features and elements of climate change, effects of climate change on rice production and yield of rice crop. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, Logit regression analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc. Results showed that 93.8% of the smallholder rice farmers were married with a mean age, household size and farming experience of 46.25 years, 9 persons and 8.36 years respectively. Major climatic variabilities experienced were irregular rainfall pattern (𝑥 ̅ = 2.88), increased temperature (𝑥 ̅ = 2.80) and excessive heat (𝑥 ̅ = 2.76). (Stunted growth (𝑥 ̅= 3.80) and reduction in yield (𝑥̅ = 3.55) were the main effects of climate change on rice production while an average yield of 9.48 tons of paddy was produced yearly. Logit regression analysis revealed that age (β = 0.011, p < 0.05) and farm experience (β = 0.014, p < 0.05) increased the likelihood of high rice yield in the study area. PCA revealed that delay in rainfall (0.82), high rate of evaporation (0.68) and use of insecticides and pesticides (0.74) were the major climatic factors influencing rice production. ANOVA revealed significant differences in the effect of climate change on rice production across the six selected locations (F = 24.29, p < 0.05). The study concluded that effect of climate change fluctuated the yield of rice in the rice producing zones of Ogun State. The study therefore recommended that more climate smart strategies should be disseminated to smallholder rice farmers to mitigate the effect of climate change and improve rice yield.
