CLUSTER ANALYSIS AND RENEWABLE ENERGY STUDIES OF SOMETREE SPECIES FOR SECOND GENERATION BIOFUEL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT:

Cluster analysis and renewable energy studies of some selected tree species in University of Ilorin was carried out. This is with a view to assess the potential that renewable natural resources energy products could have for the production of second-generation biofuel in Nigeria. Thirty line transects of 10m x 10m were laid out. Ten tree species were identified and their spatial distributions were studied. The dominant plant species are Eucalyptus citriodora, Jatropha curcas and Jatropha gossypifolia. Delonix regia, Vitex doniana and Azadiracta indica can be considered as rare species in the study area because of their low frequency values. Morphological parameters of the tree species were subjected to four types of cluster analysis, namely: single, complete, average and centroid linkages. The complete and average linkages gave the clearest clusters. Tree species that consistently form clusters irrespective of the method used namely Delonix regia, Terminalia ivorensis, Tectona grandis Eucalyptus citriodora, Bridelia ferruginea and Azadirachta indica occurred as clusters in all the linkage dendrograms. Jatropha curcas and Jatropha gossypifolia occurred as outliers. These patterns of relationship can be taken into consideration when involved in the renewable energy studies of some tree species for either first generation or second generation biofuel production.
