GROWTH COMPONENTS AND DRY FRUIT YIELD OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) VARIETIES AS INFLUENCED BY POULTRY MANURE AND STAND DENSITY IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Trials were conducted during the 2016 rainy season at two sites; the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) farm, Samaru and the experimental site for Kaduna Agricultural Development Project (KADP) in Maigana, Soba Local Government Area in the Northern Guinea Savannah zone of Nigeria to evaluate the growth components and dry fruit yield of okra varieties as affected by poultry manure rates and stand density. The treatments consisted of three okra varieties, three poultry manure rates and two stand densities. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with the treatments (varieties, poultry manure rates and stand density) combined, arranged factorially and replicated three times at both locations). An increase was recorded in all the growth components when poultry manure rate was increased from 2-6 t ha-1 and stand density was increased from 1 to 2 plants per stand. Application of 6 t ha-1 of manure gave the highest dry fruit yield (3409.5) kg ha-1 in Samaru. Clemson spineless variety produced the tallest plants while Yar`balla variety produced the highest number of leaves, leaf area index and number of branches (7.00) per plant. Based on the result obtained in this study, Jokoso variety at 2 plants per stand (75,555 plants ha-1) using 6 t ha-1 poultry manure gave the highest dry fruit yield compared to other varieties which had better growth attributes and could therefore be used by farmers to enhance okra production in the region during the wet season.
