IMPACT OF TOPOSEQUENCE ON MICRONUTRIENTS IN FLOODPLAIN IRRIGATED SOILS OF GADABIYU OF KWALI AREA COUNCIL, ABUJA FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

This study investigate the effect of toposequence on micronutrients in floodplain irrigated soils of Gadabiyu area. Two transects (A and B) were taken along three slope segments. Soil samples were collected from one profile pit at each transect starting from lower horizons to avoid contaminating samples. Composite samples were also taken randomly at depth of 0-15 and 15-30. Soils were analyzed for Micronutrients. The Data was subjected to Descriptive statistics and a One-way Anova. Findings revealed that Manganese is low at the upper slope {24.43mg kg-1 (SE±7.45)} and very high at middle and lower slope {189.67 mg kg-1 (SE±127.88)} and 149.82mg kg-1 (SE±43.28) respectively, the values for iron in the samples were very high indicative of abundance in the soils, the values for extractable copper in the soils was moderate to high while the values of Zinc in the upper slope section ranged from 1.03 mg kg1 to 3.42 mg kg-1 with a mean value of 1.67 mg kg-1 (SE±0.30). In the middle slope Zn value ranged from 1.08 mg kg-1 to 7.20 mg kg-1 and mean of 3.54 mg kg-1 (SE±1.01). For the lower slope section, Zn ranged from 1.43 mg kg-1 to 4.55 mg kg-1 and mean of 2.85 mg kg-1 (SE±0.50). hence, the effect of irrigation on the soils of the two transects studied along three catena is substantially moderate and uniform while small differences were observed, this show that the influence of irrigation activity varied with variation in slope position and this is important to consider for effective soil management. This study therefore, recommends toposequence specific soil management in order to avoid blanket conclusions.
