PLANT PARASITIC NEMATODES OF PHYTOSANITARY IMPORTANCE IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

Phytosanitation is concerned with the inspection and regulation of pests and diseases of associated with plant stocks, seeds, seedlings and vegetative cuttings prior to their entry and/or exit into countries and states. Plant-parasitic nematodes are one of the major causes of poor phytosanitary practices in many developing countries of the world. There is gap in knowledge on damages caused by plant-parasitic nematode species reported by investigations carried out in Nigeria. The potential risks of all named plant parasitic nematode specie in this review was determined by evaluating information available on their association with economically important crop hosts grown in Nigeria, their role in disease development and complexes with other pathogens. Following a number of criteria, most plant-parasitic nematodes studied have being previously reported in a peer-reviewed scientific literature as pathogenic or parasitic of an economicallyimportant crop host in Nigeria, recorded in a peer-reviewed scientific literature as vectors or forming disease associations with other pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and viruses, currently listed as regulated pests for at least one country. All listed nematode genera fulfilled one or more of the criteria to be considered to present a phytosanitary risk. Over eighty (80%) of the listed species are currently regulated by countries except Nigeria. All the listed plant-parasitic nematode genera have been reported by various authors in Nigeria, a pointer to future epidemiological implications. There is urgent need to blacklist, monitor and strictly regulate these species in Nigeria. In conclusion, it is hoped that the criteria used for this assessment will facilitate nematode pest risk analysis, policy formulation and implementation in Nigeria.
