FACTORS INFLUENCING THE CONTRIBUTION OF ICTS TO YOUNG FARMERS' INVOLVEMENT IN AGRICULTURE IN KOGI STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

This study examined the contributions of information and communications technologies ICTs to young farmers involvement in agriculture in Kogi State Nigeria The study used multistage sampling technique to select 356 respondents but 304 was finally used for the analysis after data cleaning and the removal of incomplete questionnaires Primary data was collected with the use of well structured questionnaire The analytical techniques used involved both descriptive and inferential statistics The result of the multinomial logit showed that household size and farming experience are the socioeconomic factors that positively influenced the low level involvement of young farmers in agriculture at 10 and 5 levels of significance respectively Also extension contact and farm size are the institutional and farm specific factors that influenced the low level involvement of young farmers in agriculture at 10 and 1 levels of significance Social media was the only information and communication technology that influenced the low level involvement of young farmers in agriculture at 5 level of significance Age of the household head and farming experience are the socioeconomic factors that positively influenced the high level involvement of young farmers in agriculture at 1 and 5 levels of significance respectively More so radio television email and social media are the information and communication technology variables that influenced the high level involvement of young farmers in agriculture at 1 level of significance while print media is significant at 5 level of probability The study therefore recommends among other things that social media programmes that are tailored towards enhancing the involvement of youth in agriculture and agribusiness should be more intensified.
