ASSESSMENT OF IMPROVED YAM PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES UTILIZED AND IT’S EFFECT ON THE YAM OUTPUT AMONG YAM FARMERS IN BENUE AND NIGER STATES, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

This study investigated the utilization of improved yam production technologies and its effects on yam output among farmers in Benue and Niger states, Nigeria. A three-stage sampling technique was employed to select 399 respondents, with 200 from Niger State and 199 from Benue State. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires, and the analysis involved descriptive statistics (mean, percentages, and frequency count) and inferential statistics, particularly multiple regression. The results indicated that the mean age of respondents in Niger State was 43 years, whereas in Benue State, it was 40 years. Additionally, 94.0% and 82.0% of respondents in Niger and Benue States, respectively, were married, and 95.0% and 77.5% were males. The mean household size was 8 persons in Niger State and 9 persons in Benue State. Regarding education, 71.0% and 69.4% of respondents in Benue and Niger States had formal education, respectively. Furthermore, the study revealed that 93.0% and 79.0% of respondents in Niger and Benue States, respectively, utilized improved yam technologies. Multiple regression analysis estimates on the effects of improved yam production technologies on yam output revealed that the coefficient of mulching (0.4371), use of herbicides (4159.544), fertilizer (47.230) and land preparation (192.669) in Niger State, while use of improved planting method (0.8531), use of herbicide (1.3466), fertilizer application (0.1259) in Benue State were positive and had significant effects on yam output at 1%, 5% and 10% level of probability. Meanwhile, the coefficient of staking (-0.2381) in Benue State was negative and had significant effects on yam output. It is therefore recommended that various agencies saddled with the responsibilities of developing improved yam production technologies should make it available and affordable for enhanced utilization by the farmers.
