SUSCEPTIBILITY OF GROUNDNUT CULTIVARS TO SECONDARY STORAGE PEST Tribolium castaneum (HERBST) (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE) IN STORED GROUNDNUT IN YOLA, ADAMAWA STATE

ABSTRACT:

The goal of this laboratory study was to determine how vulnerable five groundnut cultivars were to attack by the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The experiment was conducted in the Department of Crop Protection at Modibbo Adama University Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications over a three-month period. ANOVA was used to examine the data, and the treatment means were separated using the Tukeys Kramer (HSD) test with a p-value of 0.05. The study revealed that the five groundnut cultivars generated a somewhat small number of progeny, with the mean numbers for Yar-dakar, Gwandara, Yar-baino, Kampala, and Kwankwasiya being 18.35, 15.10, 12.28, 12.15, and 9.01, respectively. The developmental peroid of Yar-dakar, Gwandara, and Kampala were the greatest (44.0 days each) followed by Yar-baino and Kwankwasiya of 42.0 days and 40.0 days, respectively. All the cultivars were moderately resistant with susceptibility index that ranged from 4.77 - 5.74. Percentage grain damage and weight loss were highest in Yar-dakar of 33.15% and 33.66%, respectively as compared to the other varieties. This study revealed that T. castaneum been known as insect pest of groundnut, had the ability to attack and to breed successively in all the groundnuts cultivars. Therefore, farmers and traders are advised on choice of cultivars especially Kampala and Kwankwasiya which showed low grain damage and weight loss. Also traders are advised to devise integrated management strategies to avert these losses.
